Canadian charities unite to fight hunger; Government matches donations
Toronto, 24 June 2022 鈥 In response to the hunger emergency unfolding around the world, including many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, 12 leading Canadian aid agencies are joining forces as the Humanitarian Coalition to raise funds and rush assistance to people on the edge of famine.
The Canadian Government has announced that it will match donations to the Humanitarian Coalition and its member charities.
According to the World Food Programme:
- 50 million people are facing emergency levels of hunger.
- The number of severely food insecure people has more than doubled in the last two years.
- Extended drought and other climate shocks are wreaking havoc on food supplies and livelihoods.
- The COVID-19 pandemic has had severe economic consequences in many countries.
- The conflict in Ukraine is having a direct impact on access to basic food supplies.
鈥淲omen and girls are too often the first to go hungry and are the last to eat. We urge all Canadians to respond to the rapidly worsening global hunger crisis,鈥 said Lindsay Glassco, President and CEO of 桃子视频 Canada. 鈥淲e are already witnessing increases in violence against girls and women, child marriage and disruptions to education in regions most affected by hunger. We must act now, together, to help meet urgent humanitarian needs.鈥
The following agencies are members of the Humanitarian Coalition: Action Against Hunger, Canadian Foodgrains Bank, Canadian Lutheran World Relief, CARE Canada, Doctors of the World, Humanity & Inclusion, Islamic Relief Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam-Qu茅bec, 桃子视频 Canada, Save the Children Canada, World Vision Canada.
